Call for Proposals
GBA’s Product Innovation Grants, a component of the Green Building Products Initiative, was created to help established and start up Pennsylvania companies and Pennsylvania university researchers and teams bring innovative green building products and processes to the commercial market; the green building product market is estimated to be worth $30 to $40 billion annually by 2010. Proposals for the inaugural grant cycle were submitted at the end of September, with seven grants totally $448,000 awarded December 13, 2007.

Grant Requirements: Projects may address key product development challenges, engineering or design challenges, show a significant degree of innovation, and identify a clear path to commercialization with the potential to significantly impact innovation-based companies in the region. Other requirements include:

- Collaboration between private sector companies and university researchers/teams

- Private sector and university partners and the commercializing entity must be located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

- Awardees must sign a contractual agreement with GBA

- Projects must be conducted in two years or less

Process for Selection: Proposals are assessed based on the criteria of green building leadership, technical merit, commercialization plan viability, partnership resources, and potential market impact. Priority is given to projects that enable expedited adoption into the marketplace in one year or less and to partnerships located in GBA’s Western Pennsylvania service area. Awards are made at the discretion of GBA on the advice of a Review Committee, which is comprised of individuals with a variety of relevant experience and expertise.

Support: GBA’s Green Building Products Initiative, which includes the Product Innovation Grants, is funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority, The Heinz Endowments, and the Richard King Mellon Foundation.

Next Funding Cycle:

- Final proposals due mid-March 2008
